Albeniz's Suite Espanola are, like many of his piano pieces, miniature tone pictures of different geographical regions and musical idioms of Spain. Suite Espanola, Op. 47, is a suite for solo piano. It is mainly composed of works written in 1886 which were grouped together in 1887, in honor of the Queen of Spain.

The work originally consisted of four pieces: Granada, Cataluna, Seville and Cuba. The editor Hofmeister republished the Suite española in 1912, after Albeniz's death, but added Cadiz, Asturias, Aragon and Castile. The other pieces had been published in other editions and sometimes with different titles (Asturias was originally the prelude from the suite Chants d'Espagne).

"The challenge is to preserve the complex transcriptions in stellar performances in an excellent recording, and this 1967 effort conducted by the transcriber of the music, and in the rich acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall certainly meets the challenge. A local NW conductor said he has had few “you are there” experiences with recordings that truly transport one to the concert hall - and this is one of them." - John Sunier, 5 Stars!!!, www.audaud.com

The four pieces that Hofmeister added do not exactly reflect the geographical region to which they refer. A clear example of this is Asturias (Leyenda), whose Andalusian Flamenco rhythms have little to do with the Atlantic region of Asturias. Opus 47, the number assigned by Hofmeister, does not have any chronological relation to any of Albéniz’s other works, since the opus numbers of the pieces were randomly assigned by publishers and Albéniz himself. Despite the spurious nature of the Suite española, however, it has become one of the most performed of Albéniz's piano works, a favorite of both pianists and audiences.

"I would find the Albeniz LP reissue as an easy recommendation on musical grounds alone, but fortunately I can report that as good as the music is, the sound is even better. Dynamic swings are massive, tonal shading is accurate, percussion is deep and thunderous, and the sense of space is realistic. The orchestra is layered both front to back and side to side, and there is a sense of the venue's space all around. If I had to carry just one LP to audition equipment with, this would be my choice." – John Crossett, www.theaudiobeat.com, 4/5 Music, 5/5 Sound!
