• Best Album Notes: The Carnegie Hall Concert (Lauren Du Graf)
Alice Coltrane's The Carnegie Hall Concert is a previously unreleased recording of a historic 1971 concert. The original multi-track recording was commissioned by Impulse but wasn't released at the time. Features an all-star group including Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McBee, Ed Blackwell and others. This was a triple bill placing her in the company of Laura Nyro and The Rascals. Concert produced by Sid Bernstein, who promoted the first Beatles concert in the US.
All told, the concert's pace, textures, explosive drama, virtuosity, and limitless creativity are unmatched.... an essential entry in Coltrane's catalog...
The sound, remastered from Michel's 2-track 'reference mix' (the 4-track masters having disappeared), is a bit uneven, but the performances are epic. Sanders and Shepp, on flute and soprano saxes, are suitably meditative on the first two tracks, and explosively frenzied on tenors playing Trane's energy music. The drummers and bassists drive the proceedings and get room to stretch out, but, especially on the climactic 'Leo,' it's Turiya's powerful Tyner-esque piano that is the set's biggest revelation.
