Featuring Special Appearances by Maria Winther and Eric Bibb! Sound Quality is Outstanding! Contains 12 Tracks + Lyrics All Written by B.B. Driftwood!
B.B. Driftwood has been filming in Africa, he has a godfather in Cuba, he was living in London during the end of the 1980's working with Dave Stewart and Olle Romö (their Swedish drummer and recording engineer) in Eurythmics, plus toured in the Caribbean and South America! His music could be labeled as "Blues", but in a very broad meaning, and with "colors" of Country, Latin and Gospel. His lyrics very often reflect his views on life and own experiences.
Performance: 4.5 out of 5, Enjoyment: 4.5 out of 5, Sound quality: 5 out of 5!!!
"[B.B. Driftwood] conjures up Tom Waits, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Bill Frisell and late period Dylan, while suffusing Cuban/Brazilian rhythms, fine gospel singing and superb musicianship into the mix. ...His tuneful, bluesy voice is set against unusual chord progressions and top notch percussion form Sebastian Notini on atabaque, brushes and snare drum. Backing vocals from Paris Renita, Sylver Logan Sharp and Daryl Hunt add to the fun and match the standards of the best Leonard Cohen productions. ...My top pick is track 5, “A Way To Celebrate”. This is a way to celebrate the sweet contentment that comes from sitting down listening to people you believe are true. These are not your everyday lyrics, but words of wide experience and contemplation, set to music that will sing in your ears for days. ...did I tell you this is a superb SACD recording from Sweden’s audiophile label, Opus 3? A quick test shows the DSD layer to be significantly more rewarding than the Redbook, the image more spacious, the definition higher and the experience more relaxing. So not only is the rather short disc chock full of sweet music, but with the right equipment you get to hear it just as it was laid down." - Phil Gold, www.EnjoyTheMusic.com
"The sound of the SACD is excellent, as always with Opus 3. All of the stringed instruments (guitar, dobro, mandola, pedal steel) have a clear, warm tonality. The mixing of the vocals is stellar, especially the layering of the back-up chorus. Southward Bound is festive and listenable." - Robbie Gerson, www.audaud.com, 4/5 Stars!
B.B. Driftwood's debut release contains 12 songs all written by himself including the songs "Southward Bound", "Sweet Elizabeth", "Indian Summer" and many more. This album also includes special appearances by Maria Winther, winner of the Monica Zetterlund award in 2011 (backing vocals) and well-known Opus 3 Records blues artist Eric Bibb (guitar). Released on Sony's SACD Audiophile Format the sound quality is outstanding!
"B.B. Driftwood (the pseudonym for Bengt Skogholt), has written all the songs on this debut, tempering soul, gospel, blues and country with influences from his travels. ln addition to family in Cuba and Swedish roots, he's worked with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart and has a taste for Latin music. The superb-sounding result is intimate, down-home and just begging for a spot on Later...With Jools Holland." - www.hifinews.co.uk, September 2012
"... [L]istening to Southward Bound, one hears echoes of the South and the style of another Opus 3 artist, Eric Bibb -- not a bad starting point... By combining so many different influences in his songs, there is no chance of this album becoming stale after just a few cuts. It holds attention all the way through... This is an Opus 3 recording, which almost guarantees stellar sound, and Southward Bound doesnÂ’t disappoint. There is clean, clear tone and timbre to the mostly acoustic instruments. What electric instruments -- mostly guitar -- there are blend seamlessly with the acoustic ones... The vocals, whether DriftwoodÂ’s deep, burnished baritone or those of the multiple background singers, were both realistic and well placed within the soundstage. The added resolution of the SACD format helps this music stand out as well. If youÂ’re looking for fresh, bluesy acoustic music with enough diversity to keep your attention, then Southward Bound will appeal to you, as it did to me." - John Crossett, The Audio Beat, November 1, 2012
