Post-Humously Released R&B Album On 180g Vinyl LP!
For Record Store Day 2018 Baby HueyÂ’s The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend was released as a 2LP edition. It has long been sold out but now is being reissued as another limited pressing edition standard 1LP with no turntable mat. This title belongs in every music loverÂ’s collection and that's why it's added as a Run Out Groove Cornerstone title.
Gene Ramey, better known by his stage name of Baby Huey, was a soul singer whose larger than life and sadly short existence has often overshadowed the virtue of his music and the impact it has had in ensuing years. During the late 1960's, the Babysitters became a touring psychedelic soul act, with Ramey wearing an afro hairstyle, African-inspired robes and adding rhymes to his live performances. RameyÂ’s rhymes were similar in style to those later popularized by hip-hop.
Ramey’s sole contribution, the posthumous album, The Baby Huey Story-The Living Legend, was released after his death in 1971. Produced by Curtis Mayfield and containing many of Mayfield’s songs, the album sold poorly upon release but is now considered a classic of its period and has been influential in the development of hip-hop. Several songs from the album, including “Hard Times,” “Listen to Me,” and “Mighty, Mighty Children,” have been sampled by producers since the 1980s including notable artists such as Ice Cube, A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah, John Legend, The Roots and others.
