In a newspaper interview many, many years ago Birgit Nilsson was described as one of the extremely few opera divas regarded as having reached a kind of canonization stage. And it is true that there are not very many opera lovers who would dismiss such a statement as unfounded. Against the background of the singer's extraordinary triumphs on the most respected opera stages, such as the Metropolitan, Bayreuth, La Scala, Vienne, it is easy to understand why she became known the world over as simply La Nilsson.
Birgit Nilsson was particularly famous for her Wagner interpretations on different opera stages in the United States and Europe. It is therefore natural that most of the singer's recordings have been devoted precisely to the opera repertoire. But there are some exceptions. To the delight of Birgit Nilsson's countless admirers, we present here a CD with predominantly sacred music, recorded in Sweden. The songs were originally released as EP and LP records, respectively, in the years 1963 and 1977.
