Born one of five children in southern Italy, de Vito initially played the violin untaught having taken only music theory lessons from the local bandmaster. Her uncle, a professional violinist decided to teach her himself after hearing her attempt to play a concerto by Beriot. She entered the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro to study and graduated at age 13. She began a career as a soloist, then at age 17 became Professor of Violin at the conservatory in Bari.
