TAS Rated 2.5/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the December 2008 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
That Lucky Old Sun is an autobiographical, intimate, personal & emotional work from a living legend who is widely recognized as one of the world's greatest composers & musicians.
A musical love letter from southern California, That Lucky Old Sun continues the awe-inspiring concept album journey that Brian Wilson first began with The Beach Boys' 1966 classic, Pet Sounds & has continued to evolve during his solo career, highlighted by his 2004 critically-acclaimed Brian Wilson Presents Smile.
The four transitional narratives, co-written with Van Dyke Parks and spoken by Wilson, offer cameos on life and the heartbeat of Los Angeles which propels the album's musical story.
This piece originally debuted in a series of September 2007 concerts at London's Royal Festival Hall, and in January 2008 at Sydney's State Theatre while headlining the Sydney Festival. Wilson describes the piece as "consisting of five 'rounds', with interspersed spoken word".
"[Wilson's] most ambitious new work since returning from the wilderness, [recalling] 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile,' not least in its playfully baroque arrangements - a playground riot of glockenspiel, timpani, strings and harmonies all played with a smile - and melodic nods to the Beach Boy canon, complementing the autobiographical bent of the lyric-book." - England's Mojo magazine
"Thanks to mastering maestro Bob Ludwig, the LP's warm sonics are superb, with wide dynamics and firm bass." - Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, December 2008
