Maurizio Pollini famously won the 6th Chopin Competition in Warsaw in March 1960 at the age of 18. He was immediately signed by EMI, who recorded Chopin's First Piano Concerto with him at their Abbey Road Studios on April 20 and 21 of the same year. The recording was an immediate success, and subsequent editions of both the Penguin and Gramophone Record Guides have continued to hail it as a classic, with praise such as: "This is playing of such total spontaneity, poetic feeling and refined judgment that criticism is silenced" (Penguin Guide) and: "The expressive range of the Philharmonia on top form under Kletzki is throughout exceptional, as is the accord between soloist and conductor in matters of phrasing and shading." (Gramophone Guide)

Musicians:
The Philharmonia Orchestra
Paul Kletzki, conductor
Maurizio Pollini, piano

Selections:
Frederic Chopin (1810-1849)
