Part Of The Ten Bands One Cause Campaign To Support Cancer Patients & Their Caretakers!
Ten Bands re-issue their albums on limited edition pink vinyl, all for one cause. This is the 6th year for the initiative that has raised over $200,000 for Gilda's Club NYC, an organization that provides community support for both those diagnosed with cancer and their caretakers. It is named after comedian Gilda Radner, who passed away from cancer at the age of 43 in 1989.
Canadian singer/songwriter Colter Wall's self-titled debut full length album is like riding an ever-evolving rail between thinking, feeling, and fighting -- over the hills, down in the valleys. The collection of songs, produced by Dave Cobb, both preserves the history of and also re-ignites the reality of the modern day folk singer.
With his almost absurdly weathered baritone, Colter Wall is impossible to mistake for any other 20-something Canadian troubadour. But it's the serious songwriting on his self-titled debut that distinguishes him in the country-folk-Americana landscape. Produced by the ubiquitous Dave Cobb, Colter Wall nods to Dylan, Prine and Arlo Guthrie with sprawling story-songs that draw on Wall's own experiences, like the in-a-bad-way 'Thirteen Silver Dollars.' These are lived-in ballads, delivered by a raconteur with an attention to detail and the confidence to exist far outside of the mainstream.
Curing the mid-1990s, a new back-to-basics movement swept through country music. Johnny Cash kicked off his fruitful American Recordings partnership with Rick Rubin; Willie Nelson released the sparse, unadorned Spirit; and--in the city of Swift Current in Saskatchewan, Canada in June 1995--Colter Wall was born. Blessed with a curious, slurring baritone that burbles like smoke from a chimney, Wall writes country songs as stark and traditional as they come, accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar. To call him wiser than his years would be an understatement: veteran songwriters go to great lengths to sound so gruff and world-weary. The 11 tracks on his self-titled debut are strange and stirring enough to make him one of the genre's most exciting young voices.
