Jazz has been utilized as a powerful, emotional tool by the more imaginative producers of motion pictures and both music and film lovers have benefited greatly from the results. The soundtrack presented on this Anadisq release is perhaps one of the greatest examples of the marriage of jazz and the movies: Duke Ellington's score for Anatomy Of A Murder.
One of the greatest composers of the 20th Century and leader for 50 years of a band that grew into the greatest of jazz orchestras, Ellington is one of the dominant figures in jazz history. His musical repertoire is the largest of any single performer in jazz, and Ellington called upon the full range of his talents in creating this score, using jazz to propel the emotional climate and underline the tension and drama of the story.
Among the many talented musicians joining Ellington on this recording were: Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Paul Gonazlves and Cat Anderson. Originally released in 1959, this recording stands not only as an outstanding example of the composer's myriad of talents but also as a souvenir of a thrilling movie.
