Dvorák’s three concert overtures are in cyclical form and are forerunners of his later symphonic poems - a genre which strives to combine music with a specific program. Hidden behind the titles In Nature’s Realm, Carnival and Othello is the composer’s ambition to express contrasting human conditions in music.

In Nature’s Realm portrays Man in the seclusion of Nature. This idyll is disturbed by the exuberant bustle of a Czech carnival in the vein of Dvorák’s famous Slavonic Dances (DECCA SXL 2249). And as might be expected from a work which owes its name to Shakespeare’s drama, love and jealousy are at the center of the musical events in the Othello Overture. A return of the nature motif provides brief repose, but in the end the tragedy of violent passion wins through.

The London Symphony Orchestra under Istvan Kertész presents a finely sculpted picture which is not only clearly visible in the mind’s eye but which also leaves nothing to be desired as regards tonal quality.

Selections: Scherzo capriccioso, Concert Overtures In Nature’s Realm, Carnival, Othello.
