On his first of many to come for Blue Note and what was also his album debut as a leader, trumpeter Hubbard at the tender age of twenty-two, made both a strong statement and lasting impression with Open Sesame. Its a stunning debut that finds a very interesting mix of cats joining in on old and new but always invigorating tunes, all. Fellow youngster Tina Brooks lends his tenor and fresh ideas (Hubbard would return the favor the following week by joining Brooks on his now infamous bar-setting True Blue session) to the quintet while fast-rising McCoy Tyner, soon off to become a key component of the classic John Coltrane Quartet, makes a rare Blue Note appearance as a supporting player, on piano. Sam Jones bass and Clifford Jarvis drumming blend perfectly, especially on Hubbards original Hubs Nub and the title tune plus a smokin version of All Or Nothing Or All.
