Gene was the son of Albert Ammons, the father of the boogie-woogie piano style. He was able to incorporate this sense of swing into his bluesy style of tenor saxophone playing to great effect. Gene is joined here by his "all-star" band that included such talent as Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Art Taylor on drums and Doug Watkins on bass to name just a few. The sound is big and bold in the "old-school" style and the playing very soulful; in all, a quite memorable session.
