180g Vinyl Reissue! Half Speed Mastered & Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
Nursery Cryme came in 1971, spotlighting the instrumental power and theatricality of the new lineup on stand-outs including "The Musical Box," "The Return of the Giant Hogweed," and "The Foundation of Salmacis."
Nursery Cryme was the bands third album but their first to be released in the U.S. There was already a strong buzz coming from England about this exciting new group and FM radio picked up on the Nursery Cryme, playing long mysterious cuts, uninterrupted. The strong writing and growing theatrics of lead singer Peter Gabriel were rooted in storytelling with strong British references. The album kicks off on Side A with Musical Box, an underground radio favorite of over ten minutes that eventually builds in intensity to an exploding cathedrallike finale. Other favorites include The Return of the Giant Hogweed and Seven Stones. Besides Gabriel, this version of the band featured Mike Rutherford on bass, Steve Hackett on guitar, Tony banks on multiple keyboards, and a very quiet, at least for now, Phil Collins, here providing some fine drumming.
"...these are the songs that showed what Genesis could do, and they still stand as pinnacles of what the band could achieve." -Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com
