This Memphis-born musician and composer earned his initial fame in the late '50's as a member of Ray Charles' groups. Breaking out on his own in 1963 he released Soul of the Ballad portrays Crawford's innate ability to add a blues coloration to his jazz performances, something not many modern jazzmen can do successfully. Crawford also reveals here that he has the "soul" of a poet, delivering unpretentious, personalized ballads within the realm of jazz. Backed by the Marty Paich Orchestra, Crawford worked with recording engineer Bull Putnum under the supervision of Nesuhi Ertegun in delivering such classic tracks as Blueberry Hill, I Left My Heart In San Francisco and Stormy Weather.
