On her first cover album, Heather Nova reinterprets songs by Rick Astley, Sting, The National and the Bee Gees, among others.
Says Heather: "Although I consider myself first and foremost a songwriter, I have occasionally enjoyed interpreting others' songs and have thrown one into a live show now and then. I really enjoy getting inside a song, breaking it down to bare bones to find its essence, and then singing it in a way that feels like my own. Sometimes big production can obscure the emotion of a lyric, and I love to bring that out. Sometimes the lyrics can be sung with a different approach so that you feel more, or feel something different, to the original. I also love how singing a song written by a man can completely change when sung from a woman's perspective. It's all about transformation and reinvention, and I love the adventure of it!
