Impex Records is proud to present an exclusive Record Store Day 2026 edition of guitar icon John McLaughlin's surprising new jazz fusion LP. The unexpected 2025 audiophile hit release of an in-development film score features McLaughlin's signature fiery, complex style and yearning spiritual exploration, bringing dramatic sweep to both hot-fusion rave-ups and evocative ballads. His scorching electric and mellifluous acoustic guitar melodies are boosted to incredible heights by the virtuosic performances from Gary Husband (drums/keyboards), Julian Siegel (saxophone), Misha Mullov-Abbado, and Etienne Mbappé (bass). These industry vets spark fire on heavier tunes like "The Scene" and introspective delicacy on the ballad "Nathaniel and Christine," creating one of the most unexpected independent jazz releases of the year! The Record Store Day version is limited to 500 copies and pressed on "Brooklyn Sunset" swirl 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology. It delivers spectacular sound and is the only way to experience McLaughlin's personal version of the album closer "The End." Music for Abandoned Heights is a can't-miss pick up for fans of John McLaughlin and great jazz-rock music!
I love this album. John's songs are so beautiful and the playing is strong and sensitive. An album you can listen to over and over as you find new corners and performances to admire.
McLaughlin isn't revisiting old ground — he's still exploring, still refining, still pushing into expressive territory that feels unmistakably his. Music for Abandoned Heights stands on its own as a compact, thoughtful, and surprisingly emotional statement from an artist who continues to create with purpose.
Abandoned Heights now joins my collection of favorite film scores. I've played it a dozen times, and it pins me to the listening seat from first to last... It's the most engaging fusion album I've heard in an exceptionally long time.
From a sonic perspective, this work sets the bar high: from the 24-bit/48 kHz recording to the mastering and vinyl cutting, everything was crafted with the utmost precision. The result is an LP that impresses with its outstanding sound.
We had been waiting a long time to release this music, which Jack had by 2019. Abey Fonn from Impex Records and I decided that the music had to come out whether or not there is a film. I love this album. I love the way the musicians played together. The Impex vinyl sound is just outstanding.
