János Starker was a true aristocrat of the cello. He was universally acknowledged as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, and a devoted pedagogue. This recording contains a broadcasting recital in Paris, 1983, with his regular partner in chamber music from the 1970s, eminent French pianist Alain Planès. Starker played Beethoven's Third Sonata and Bach's second Cello Suite, the pieces for which he was greatly admired and acclaimed. Starker was still very much in his prime, playing with a refined and subtly colored tone and an immaculate legato. Although his Bach was remarkably consistent over the years, this performance of Suite No. 2 stood out for his vital rhythm and great style.
