Jefferson Airplane's controversial 1969 album, Volunteers features anti-war messages within its songs. The album also explores nature, communities, and ecology. Musically, the album is characterized by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen's razor-sharp guitar work and the distinctive piano playing of Nicky Hopkins.

The group's sixth album, it was the first to be wholly recorded in San Francisco, at Wally Heider's 16-track studio. Guests include Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, Nicky Hopkins on piano, Joey Covington on percussion, and David Crosby and Stephen Stills.
