Any new project conceived by Joe Jackson is presented to the world that very same day and at the very best broadcasting time, as recent times have shown. And there's always a surprise in store because the British artist's style and means of expression were and still are as changeable as the colour of a chameleon. After venturing into the regions of "Jump and Jive", Jackson followed this up in 1982 with an album entitled "Night and Day" which soon took him to the top of the British charts. The programmatic title certainly holds what it promises for the numbers included on the recording are as varied as day and night themselves. Alongside technically perfect rock ballads one finds, for instance, intensely rhythmic ethno numbers with an African or Latin-American origin. Some are pleasantly easy-going, while others - such as Chinatown - demand several hearings and real concentration on the part of the listener in order to take in the finely chiseled mix of Beat and Far-Eastern melodies. Of one thing, however, one can be sure: this re-release is tremendous fun.
