One of the most formidable improvisers of the post-bebop 1950's, Johnny Griffin attracted more than his share of nicknames: "Little Giant" referred jointly to his large musical stature and small size; the widely-used "Fastest Gun in the West" placed (in the tenor player's own opinion) undue emphasis on his ability to perform at blistering tempos. This LP was the first of several attempts to change Griffin's image through more carefully structured albums.

A swinging date from August 1959 with Johnny Griffin on tenor sax, Blue Mitchell, trumpet, Julian Priester, trombone, Wynton Kelly, piano, Sam Jones, bass and Albert Heath on drums. This was recorded shortly after Johnny's tenure with Thelonius Monk at the Five Spot, and it showcases his agile style and his gift of great soloing.

Selections: Olive Refractions, The Message, Lonely One, 63rd Street Theme, Playmates, Venus And The Moon.
