"Julie Is Her Name", the debut album by singer/actress Julie London, is regarded by jazz and '50s pop enthusiasts as a genuine classic. Originally released in 1955, it features legendary guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood.
Julie London might best be described as the girl with the "come hither" voice. In this, her first album, Julie's molten mezzo is handsomely set off by Kessel's guitar and Leatherwood's bass - a blending of three skills that adds up to an intimate, sleek, and sultry production.
A performer who radiates charm and friendliness, Julie is a beautiful, piquant yet unassuming young woman who has flaxen hair, and eyes that are blue. These qualities are vocally evident in her furry singing style. Her choice of numbers is exactly right - ranging from "I Love You" to "Cry Me A River", the latter being a lush, lachrymose item written especially for Julie by her childhood friend, Arthur Hamilton. "Cry Me A River", when heard by fellow members of the radio and music fraternity, created an instantaneous and enthusiastic reaction. As a result of this uniform response, Liberty released "Cry" as a single record, catapulting Julie to fame overnight.
This is an album of thirteen vocals by Julie London. Something should be said about this material and the singer. First, the songs. Though they are not in any sense identical, they have one thing in common; an air of bittersweet love. Even the merry lyrics seem to say it... there is a sweet impermanence about things; the marigold will lose its yellow; spring will not last forever; not all butterflies will stay genial. The singer is a sharp contradiction of this proposition. She's a happy creature, full of summertime. Her voice is unique, it is special. It is not one of those Broadway show voices which turn the pit band into a distant fife. Nor will she ever make La Scala without serious diplomatic interventions. Her voice is smaller, a good deal more exact and perfectly true. If there must be definitions, she is less the gaudy nightingale and more the bird of passage. A bird of passage is one that sings in a lost corner of the garden.

This is London's finest collection of songs. Kessel and Leatherwood provide exquisite accompaniment on a number of standard interpretations. "Cry Me a River", the first song on the album, was London's first and biggest hit, and it has never sounded better. Nor have her sultry versions of "Easy Street", "Gone With the Wind", and "Say It Isn't So" sounded so wonderful. Mastered by Bernie Grundman on an all-tube mastering system, "Julie Is Her Name" will take you back to a time of legendary performances and classic sounds.
For music fans who were swinging in the '50s or any high-fidelity music lover, "Julie Is Her Name" is not to be missed. This 45 RPM 180g 2-LP set is extremely stunning in sound.
