2003 Grammy Award Winner for Best Orchestral Performance!
Michael Tilson Thomas has been awarded Gramophone's 2005 Artist of the Year!
This Limited Edition Series debut of Mahler's powerful and evocative symphonic work is the first installment of a complete symphonic cycle from this premiere orchestra and world-acclaimed conductor. Mahler No. 6 was recorded using Sony's Direct Stream Digital technology and is a pure DSD recording!
"His sixth symphony is a work of enormous exploration, of testing musical limits. Here Mahler has pushed his technical abilities as a composer and his perceptual boundaries as a human being. The Sixth looks unflinchingly at the obsessive, destructive nature of man, the unremitting capacity of humankind to hurt itself. But there is more than despair, there is utter honesty, humor, tenderness, and in the third movement, homage to the power of love." -Maestro Tilson Thomas.
This live concert recording was made September 12th-15th, 2001, and captures a collective response to the events of September 11th. The performance heard here emerges from a defining moment in American History. The San Francisco Symphony say they have embarked on an ambitious Mahler recording project and plans to record all of the composer's nine symphonies and the Adagietto from the unfinished Symphony No.10 over the next five seasons for the Delos label.
"An eloquently tragic Sixth...the SFS strings dig very deep to produce a dark, throaty tone of startling vehemence. Ardently played and generously phrased." - Gramophone
"An exceptionally intense and remarkable coherent performance that is not to be missed." - Gramophone
