Callas Performs Puccini Arias on Vinyl LP!
"Giacomo Puccini (born 1858) began his musical training as a private pupil in his native town of Lucca, and later on he graduated to the Milan Conservatory where he was instructed in operatic composition by the celebrated Ponchielli. His first opera Le Villi was produced with some success in 1884, but his second, Edgar, which followed in 1889, was a failure, and Puccini was so discouraged that he almost abandoned his chosen career. However, he decided to try his hand at adapting and setting the Abbé Prevost's novel Manon, and in 1893 it was produced with immense success. From then onwards, despite frequent ups and downs, there was no doubt which path Puccini was to tread, and it was not long before he was hailed in Italy as the successor to the almost legendary Verdi." -from the sleeve notes by Leigh Douglas
