Midnight Love was Marvin Gaye's final album, conceived in 1982 after a long recluse in Ostende, Belgium. Harmonious, sensual, uplifting and funky, Midnight Love became his swansong after Gaye went through a rough time, secluded from the mainstream and finding out where he belonged. We can safely say, it would be in the studio. He wrote every song on Midnight Love himself, which culminated in the smash hit "Sexual Healing". A creative genius and trained multi-instrumentalist, Gaye played every instrument on the song himself, except for the guitar. We can only guess what gems Gaye would have produced in his later years, as his life was taken by his own father just 18 months later.
"Of all his number one songs, this album's first release, 'Sexual Healing,' became his longest running number one single on the Billboard R&B charts (ten straight weeks)... Gaye concocted a pioneering percussive sound that was balladic in taste but stimulating in feel. As this project may not be an absolute erotic expression or a socially challenging plea from Gaye like on some of his previous albums, nonetheless, Midnight Love is a classic Marvin Gaye effort. In addition to this project thriving with Gaye's enthusiastic spirit, it has his harmonious background vocals, his stunning vocal arrangements and his creative penmanship, as he wrote all the selections." - Craig Lytle, allmusic.com
"Midnight Love is anything but boring. It has the rhythmic tension, melodic delicacy and erotic resilience of Gaye's greatest music, and it extends those attributes by applying contemporary synthesizer gimmickry judiciously and soulfully... [H]is synthesizer work, as well as his drumming, is a revelation... That Gaye not only commands our attention so forcefully but that he commands it so effortlessly should remind us that he has been one of our most underrated musical forces for a long time." - Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone
"[A]n inspired, mature work from one of the greatest soul singers, and it is certainly one of the best soul albums of the Eighties. Loaded with infectious dance-floor grooves, sophisticated guitar work, third-world rhythms and seductive vocals, Midnight Love did indeed prove to be Gaye's comeback... the album was a hit, selling 2.7 million copies worldwide, more than 2 million of them in the United States." - Rolling Stone
