Pink Floyd's first UK Number 1 album, this was the band's first recording with an orchestra. Title track, the "Atom Heart Mother" Suite, took up a full side of the LP, while other tracks include "If" and "Fat Old Sun". Atom Heart Mother featured the Floyd in their pomp - "I like a bit of pomp," says Gilmour (who also made his first lyrical contribution with the gentle "Fat Old Sun").
The cover was designed by Hipgnosis, and was the first one to not feature the band's name on the cover, or contain any photographs of the band anywhere. This was a trend that would continue on subsequent covers throughout the 1970s and beyond.
