Critically Acclaimed Second Album!
Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 461/500!
Metal Box was the second album by Public Image Ltd, released by Virgin Records on November 23, 1979. The album was retitled Second Edition in the U.S. The album was a departure from PiL's relatively conventional debut First Issue, released in 1978, with the band moving into a more avant-garde sound characterized by John Lydon's cryptic vocals, Jah Wobble's propulsive dub-inspired basslines, and the abrasively "metallic" guitar sound developed by guitarist Keith Levene. Second Edition (Metal Box) is widely regarded as a landmark of post-punk. In 2003, the album was ranked number 461 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
"It's a hallmark of uncompromising, challenging post-punk, hardly sounding like anything of the past, present, or future...what they achieved with their second record is a completely unique hour of avant-garde noise." -Andy Kellman, allmusic.com
