That Ottorini Respighi, Italy's only symphonist in the early 20th century, created a sensation mainly due to his three genial symphonic poems. Respighi's saturated sound and tonal coloring conjures up a vision of Roman festivals. Lorin Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra, whose repertoire includes numerous large symphonic works from the Late Romantic era, were surely predestined to perform this music. The conductor brings the massive brass passages well to the fore but also lends the warmth and brilliance to the lyrical episodes. The rest is left to the excellent recording technology of the mid-70s and the keen ears of the legendary recording engineer Kenneth Wilkinson.

Selections:
1. Circenses (Games In The Circus Maximus)
2. Il Giubileo (The Jubilee)
3. L'Ottobrata (The October Festival)
4. La Befana (The Epiphany)
5. I Pini Di Villa Borghese (The Pine Trees Of The Villa Borghese)
6. I Pini Presso Una Ctacomba (Pine Trees Near A Catacomb)
7. I Pini Del Gianicolo (The Pine Trees Of The Janiculum)
8. I Pini Della via Appia (The Pine Trees Of The Appian Way)
