Originally released in 1972 on the iconic Muse label, The Free Slave captures Roy Brooks at the peak of his powers — a drummer of deep conviction and fire, blending soul-rooted swing with the outer reaches of post-bop and avant-garde expression. This landmark live session brims with energy, featuring extended improvisations and tight interplay between some of the most vital players in modern jazz; Woody Shaw (trumpet), George Coleman (tenor sax), Hugh Lawson (piano), and Cecil McBee (bass).
The four extended tracks—three originals and one complex McBee composition—are cookers in the tradition of Max Roach's quintets. Inventive solos spool out from catchy heads, impelled and accented by Brooks' polyrhythmic drumming, pitch bending (through his Breath-a-Tone), and crisp rim shots... TAS readers will appreciate what a brilliant job Matt Lutthans at The Mastering Lab in Salina, Kansas, has done mastering the original tapes for pressing to 180-gram LPs at Germany's Optimal Media.
