Mastering was done by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and vinyl was manufactured at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI). The titles were handpicked by Harley and cover lesser-known Blue Note classics, modern era standouts, and albums from other labels under the Blue Note catalog.
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180 gm audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Blue Note/Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
Saxophonist & flutist Sam Rivers followed-up his striking debut Fuchsia Swing Song with the tremendous album Contours, which was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio in 1965 with a top flight band featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums. The quintet explored four of Rivers' engaging original compositions"Point of Many Returns", "Dance of the Tripedal", "Euterpe" & "Mellifluous Cacophony".
"With a taut bunch of players at his side, including Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and the indefatigable Ron Carter, River shows the door that leads from the land of modal jazz into more avant garde territory. The arrangements and playing are starting to become more open and freeform, with the influence of Eastern melodics and modern classical finding their way into the mix. It's a huge development heard with spectacular clarity on this well-mastered new pressing." - Paste Magazine, Record Time: New & Notable Vinyl Releases, June 2019
