Great Sounding Classical Title from EMI!
180g Audiophile Vinyl Cut from the Original EMI Stereo Analogue Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!
Otto Klemperers reputation lies almost entirely on the recordings he made for EMI with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the last two decades of his life. As a young man though, he was at the vanguard of much of the new music of the 20th century, and was friends with Mahler (assisting at the premiere of Mahlers 8th Symphony) and championed works by Janacek, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Hindemith, as well as being a composer himself.
The Viennese tradition of Beethoven, Brahms was something in which Klemperer was, of course, immersed and Schubert was no exception, with these performances described by the GRAMOPHONE as lovely Schubert playing.
Recorded on 20 May and 4 & 6 February 1963 at Kingsway Hall, London with legendary producer Walter Legge and engineer Douglas Larter.
The original April 1964 review in GRAMOPHONE enthused: The first movement of the Unfinished is a surprise... Klemperer plays it swiftly, keeps it going throughout, and the result is both beautiful and extremely exciting. Here is an example of a great interpreter going straight to the score itself and just playing what is written there ...the playing of both symphonies...is always marvelous; and... the recording... is very good indeed. I would recommend these performances above the others without hesitation.
Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional advance playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.
