The Hallograph Soundfield Optimizer consists of two arrays that are easily placed behind each speaker near the corners of the backwall. "But this is really about sound reproduction, not aesthetics. The Hallograph does for my audio system what laser vision does for my sight. Smearing of tones, edginess of timbre, and wooly bass have now vanished to be replaced by a clarity of pitch and timbre, an improvement in micro and macro attack, bloom and decay, and a very natural, you are there sense to all types of music; chamber, symphonic, jazz, male or female vocals, massed chorus, and opera. I have been tweaking my system for years, and have made some very good improvements this past year. The Hallograph stands with the best of these improvements (components, cables, and the ubiquitous Shakti stones) and for the most part at a much smaller investment. They truly are adjustable with audible changes, and I have had some fun "tweaking the tweak." "As I sit here writing this short review, I have to admit something to clear my conscience. When I called Sam to order the Shakti Hallographs, I felt extremely confident that I would return them. I had performed my due diligence but was still harboring these “snake oil” perceptions. I even took photos as I unpacked them to make sure I could get them back in the box correctly. I have a working man’s system and, albeit nice, it is not on par with most professional reviewer’s systems. I have proper room treatments and also have spent a lot of time fine tuning equipment set up and calibration. My system, to me, sounds great. As with any audiophile, my opinion of “great” changes with the wind some days. I know that certain conditions (electricity, static, wax in my ears, etc.) cause variables and I accept small doses of discontent without making drastic changes. So, with that said, I know my system and its tolerances fairly well."
"As I said before, I was skeptical about the Shaktis. I am always interested in the idea that some new product can transform what I already am happy with into something better. The problem is that when you really get your system tuned in, you can spend a lot of money on things that improve your sound in such small ways that you are really paying a lot for a diminished return. Audiophiles can write books on this subject. Audiophile wives can really write books on this subject, and remind you of it over and over again. So, you can imagine the reaction from my wife as she wanders into my listening room and sees these objects that look like a pair of Poseidon’s tridents standing there. You know that reaction when someone gives a look of disappointment and shakes their head slowly as to say, “you sad, crazy and pitiful soul”? I got that look, with a little hint of evil eye added in for impact. It took me about 20 minutes to set the Hallographs up in the recommended position, outside and behind the speakers in the corners of the room, and angle them towards my listening position properly. I adjusted the toe-in slightly on both until I felt that the music sounded properly spaced across the span of the room and then I really started listening. Album after album, I tested different types of music with a wide variety of frequency and dynamic characteristics. I can’t explain how the Hallographs work in a way that would please an engineer, but I can say that they truly work in a wonderful, lovely way. It wasn’t a “blow me down” kind of reaction but more of a realization that I could hear everything clearer, more pure and accurate. The soundstage width was a fairy dramatic difference. Instruments seem to be coming from places in the room they didn’t before. I have always heard people say that you reach your goal when you can remove the physical speaker from the music. Well, that’s what they did. Everything I played was just more engaging, warmer, better defined. Instruments sounded better and more separated. I was actually really surprised as I continued to listen. They really work, weird! I woke up the next day in fear that I had just had a good day the day before and that my bliss would disappear. It was the same reaction the next day and they still continued to surprise me as I sit down to listen after having been away from my system for a day or two."
