The Donnas are an American rock band formed in Palo Alto, California in 1993 and consisting of Brett Anderson (lead vocals), Allison Robertson (guitar, backing vocals), Maya Ford (bass, backing vocals) and Amy Cesari (drums, percussion, backing vocals). Cesari replaced Torry Castellano, who left the band in 2009 due to tendonitis. All met prior to high school and were self-taught musicians that practiced in Castellano's garage daily during their years at Palo Alto High School. They called themselves Ragady Anne in the early days and shortly thereafter changed their name to The Electrocutes. They decided to create another band with the same members that would play softer tunes but retain their metal queen image of The Electrocutes. To help fans distinguish between the two bands they all took matching "Donna" monikers, where all their names were Donna and their last names were the first initial of their last name (Brett Anderson became Donna A., etc.), which they used only when performing as The Donnas. They hired producer Darin Raffaelli for their first two full length albums, the first of which was simply called The Donnas and released on Darin's Superteem! record label. They took a week off their senior year of high school to tour Japan, and were promoted by Pinky Aoki a.k.a. The Phantomgift. Afterwards, they signed with Lookout! Records and as their exposure grew, eventually signed with Atlantic Records in 2001.
In 2002, The Donnas released their fifth studio album and Atlantic debut, Spend The Night. The album represented their first attempt at mainstream success. It was the band's first charting record on the Billboard 200, peaking at #62. With their most successful single, "Take It Off," which peaked at #19 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, they were booked for appearances on Total Request Live, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show and The Late Show, and in the summer of 2003 they played the main stage at Lollapalooza. The album was well received at the time, getting 4 out of 5 stars from AllMusic, 4 ½ out of 5 stars from Alternative Press, 4 out of 5 stars from Blender and 4 out of 5 stars from Q.
