This is a flat-out killer record! Highly recommended. Cole is fabulous, period.Holly Cole explores a number of styles on this, her second album. Adding pop, blues, country and a French ballad to her standard, low-key jazz, Cole demonstrates that not only does she have impeccable taste, but she has the talent to make all of the material sound convincing. On "Get Out Of Town," pianist Aaron Davis gets up while playing and places one of his hands over the piano string while continuing to play with the other. This damped-string effect is an extremely interesting counterpoint to Cole's idiosyncratic, sexy style. This is an all-time audiophile favorite.
Holly Cole's smoky voice is sultry, yet she's ironically humorous and candid while reshaping traditional standards and pop classics. She is one of the world's most alluring and talented vocalists, with an interpretive range that delves deeply into jazz standards and modern pop. Her 1993 release, DonÂ’t Smoke In Bed has always been praised for itÂ’s excellent sound. The Holly Cole Trio was experimenting with pop elements by the time they recorded this memorable release. The trio's rendition of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" became a crossover hit and highlighted the group's changing direction.
"...David Was produced DonÂ’t Smoke in Bed in a straightforward, uncluttered manner that focused cleanly on ColeÂ’s voice and let the subtle contributions of her primary accompanists, pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch, come through. The Toshiba CD sounds very good..., but Kevin Gray has remastered the recording at Coherent Audio for a new two-channel SACD/CD (Analogue Productions CAPP 049 SA), and the music now flows more effortlessly because Gray has given it more room to stretch out.
"Piltch’s bass in the opening of “I Can See Clearly Now” is more commanding on the SACD’s DSD tracks; I can now hear the vibration of the strings. The accompanying percussion is set off more distinctly and is easier to place in relation to the bass. Cole’s voice is farther out into the room, and the touch of reverb added to it is clearer, which gives it more body. When Davis enters, his piano rings out and the notes sustain longer. The notes of his solo are more sharply etched, as are Piltch’s bass lines. On the original CD, the strings that enhance the song as the arrangement builds crowd the soundstage, while on the SACD Gray gives all the instruments and Cole more room, so the strings seem more integrated into the fabric of the recording." -- Joseph Taylor, SoundStage Hi-Fi, November 2012
