Vinyl Reissue Series Commemorates 65th Anniversary of Prestige Records and 90th Birthday of Legendary Engineer Rudy Van Gelder!
The near-impromptu results of 1960s live LP At The Blackhawk are a triumph of jazz improvisation. Monk was scheduled to make a sextet album as co-leader with drummer Shelly Manne, but after two days' work, the chemistry wasn't there. The producer added Harold Land and Joe Gordon to the Monk working group for one night at the San Francisco nightclub, and the results were solid, thanks to the unquenchable spirit of Thelonious Monk.
"The extra horns uplift the date and add some surprising moments to what otherwise might have been a conventional but still spirited live session." -Scott Yanow, allmusic.com
