Vijay Iyer-Led Trio On Double LP!
JazzTimes' The Top 40 Jazz Albums of 2021 - Rated 5/40!
Pitchfork The 50 Best Albums Of 2021 - Rated 42/50!
Vijay Iyer presents a powerful new trio, in which he is joined by two key figures in creative music, Tyshawn Sorey and Linda May Han Oh. "We have an energy together that is very distinct. It has a different kind of propulsion, a different impulse and a different spectrum of colors."
Repertoire on Uneasy, recorded at Oktaven Audio Studio in Mount Vernon, New York in December 2019, includes Iyer originals written over a span of 20 years, plus Gerri Allen's "Drummer's Song" and a radical recasting of Cole Porter's "Night And Day."
Uneasy offers a portrait of an emergent trio discovering a multivalently complex language while simultaneously articulating its myriad possibilities. The end result is centered, action-oriented music that is at once gloriously colorful and brilliantly articulated.
Bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey are among the most melodic of players on instruments usually limited to rhythm roles. The tunefulness of Oh's high-pitched strings and Sorey's toms allow them to engage with pianist Iyer and his compositions in ways that are often as provocative as they are sympathetic, thus justifying the album's title.
