First Time Steven Wilson Remixes On Vinyl!
TAS Rated 4/5 Music, 3.5/5 Sonics in the December 2018 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
The year 2018 Marks the 50th anniversary for the group YES. In celebration they release YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES which spotlights five studio albums that helped secure the bands induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES are available as a five album set. It includes remixed versions of: The Yes Album (1971); Fragile (1971); Close To The Edge (1972); the double album Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973); and Relayer (1974). Each album features remixed audio by Steven Wilson, released on vinyl for the first time.
The record case features artwork created specifically for the set by Roger Dean, whose artwork and trademark calligraphy are synonymous with the bands identity; two of the albums, Close To The Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans, have new cover art, while the remaining three covers have been reworked by Dean.
After their initial release in the 1970s, Wilsons articulate remix shines a light on the stellar performances that run deep through each of these the albums, from hits like "Roundabout" and "Ive Seen All Good People," to album-side length epics like "Close To The Edge" and "The Gates Of Delirium."
The music included in this collection confirms the bands standing as the most enduring, ambitious, and virtuosic progressive band in rock history. It also follows the band through a number of personnel changes. Starting in February 1971 with YESs third studio release, The Yes Album, the band featured vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford. Released just nine months later, Fragile was YESs first release with keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The same line-up returned on 1972s Close To The Edge. A year later, drummer Alan White made his YES debut on Tales From Topographic Oceans. And finally, keyboardist Patrick Moraz joined for Relayer in 1974.
"...By the time 1976's Going for the One rolled around, Yes was attempting to recreate an earlier and more accessible sound. During the early 70s, however, there was no predicting what the next album would sound lik - or who, for that matter, would play on it, as personnel changes took place on almost every record. The constants during this phase were Jon Anderson (vocals), Steve Howe (guitar), and Chris squire (bass). Alan White replaced Bill Bruford on drums with Topographic Oceans, and the keyboard duties switched from Tony Kaye to Rick Wakeman to Patrick Moraz. While opinions differ as to the ultimate lineup, the state of flux helped keep things fresh, and this box set captures progressive rock at its least predictable and most popular. The set looks impressive, with both reinvented and slightly tweaked album covers by Roger Dean. Appropriately enough, the remix landed in the hands of Steven Wilson, long the central figure in the world of progressive rock reissues (is there even any competition?), and Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios cut the vinyl from hi-res 96/24 master files." - Jeff Wilson, The Absolute Sound, December 2018
"... During this period Yes had a penchant for dynamics on the grandest scale. On the original pressings, abruptly loud passages can sound harsh and distorted, and the SW remix helps reign that in. The remix also stands out for its separation and detail..." - Jeff Wilson, The Absolute Sound, December 2018
