This session by the Al Haig Trio was actually produced by Henri Renaud, the French jazz pianist. (He visited New York in the very early part of 1954, with the object of recording those musicians particularly associated with Birdland). The selections of titles on the album couldn't be bettered. Haig's fleet and graceful variations and the sheer subtleu and understatement of his playing are a source of continuing joy. The logic of his keyboard improvisations, combined with his instinctive good taste, make this an outstanding recording. Yardbird suite and Spotlite say it all - bebop piano at its finest - while Round midnight receives a most sensitive and searching treatment.
