Back to Black, Amy Winehouse's second and final studio album, was originally released in October 2006 by Island Records. Influenced by the pop and soul music of 1960s girl groups, Winehouse collaborated with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, along with Sharon Jones' band The Dap-Kings, to assist her on capturing the sounds from that time period while blending them with contemporary R&B and neo-soul music.
The charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album, which smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes-tinged title song "Back to Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone" and the album's closer, "Addicted." Back to Black was acclaimed by music critics, and has also been cited as being a key influence to the widespread popularity of British soul throughout the late 2000s, paving the musical landscape for artists such as Adele, Duffy and Estelle.
Although Back to Black does see [Winehouse] deserting jazz and wholly embracing contemporary R&B, all the best parts of her musical character emerge intact, and actually, are all the better for the transformation from jazz vocalist to soul siren....[H]er eye for details and her way of relating them are delightful....[T]he songs on Back to Black are universal...
