Vinyl LP Reissue!
1963s Ugetsu was recorded at the legendary Birdland club, when the New York post-bop era was still very much in progress. Featuring both a young Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, Ugetsu remains a reaffirmation of the belief that this kind of on-the-scene adventure can create some of the most effective recorded jazz.
Blakey is joined by Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman. The 1963 release marked Riverside's debut at the Birdland, one of the most famous and celebrated American jazz clubs in New York City. The album was recorded live from the club in June 1963 and released in October.
"Ugetsu, a 1963 live set from the original Birdland, finds Art Blakey & His Jazz Messengers at the peak of their powers with one of their strongest lineups...Overall, the group is precise, expressive, and swinging hard, delivering its message from the grandest platform of the time." -Rovi Staff, allmusic.com
