The five-piece ensemble Aulos-Blaserquintett-Stuttgart perform compositions for wind instruments by Hindemith, Villa-Lobos, and Ravel.
All members of Aulos-Blaserquintett-Stuttgart completed an extensive music study and achieved international honors and could make a name for themselves as solo artists.
The wind quintets by Paul Hindemith and Heitor Villa-Lobos are important works of their kind produced between 1920 and 1930. While Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik für fünf Bläser Op. 24, No. 2 is a witty study in ensemble effects produced by linear contributions, the instruments in Villa-Lobos' one-movement Quintette en forme de Chôros keep breaking off to indulge in brilliant flights of their own. The transcription of Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin is ideally suited to the particular timbre of wind quintet, and not only manages to retain the transparency of the original piano version, but at times even enhance it by the clever separation of sonorities.
