Naturalist and sound recordist Dr. Bernie Krause first surfaced during the early 1960s as Pete Seeger's replacement in the legendary folk group The Weavers; In 1979, he issued his debut solo album, Citadels of Mystery.

The serene nature of this album does not mask the conditions in which it was recorded. It was originally planned as a duo project with partner Paul Beaver who died in January 1975. The deal for the album had collapsed prior to Beaver's death with the firing of CBS executive Clive Davis. The recording would have to wait another four years to be released.
