180 Gram Double Vinyl! Featuring Original Tracks from Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, Grant Green, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone, Marlena Shaw & More!
One of the most legendary and oldest music labels, Blue Note, has decided to combine their prowess in music selection with the high quality vinyl that the Music On Vinyl label provides.
They co-operated to release the tenth installment of Blue Note Trip on vinyl. DJ Maestro dug deep into the Blue Note catalogue to come up with this gem of a trip. On Late Nights, you can find energizing songs by Donald Byrd, Horace Silver, Marlena Shaw and Grant Green.
When Horace Silver once wrote out his rules for musical composition, he expounded on the importance of "meaningful simplicity." The pianist could have just as easily been describing his own life. For more than fifty years, Silver has simply written some of the most enduring tunes in jazz while performing them in a distinctively personal style. It's all been straightforward enough, while decades of incredible experiences have provided the meaning.
About Donald Byrd: "'He was a very lyrical player, a very economical player, a very thoughtful player,' says Nicholas Payton, a contemporary trumpet player. 'He was one of the real melody-makers at that time. A real thoughtful, introspective player with a very beautiful sound.'" - NPR
"[Marlena Shaw's] performances are marked by an artful blend of pop standards and straight-ahead jazz tunes. Her extroverted stage presence gives her an edge over other vocalists, and clearly, singing live before an audience is where she feels most comfortable." - Richard Skelly, allmusic.com
Grant Green's recording relationship with Blue Note was to last, with a few exceptions, throughout the Sixties. From 1961 to 1965, Grant made more appearances on Blue Note LPs, as leader or sideman, than anyone else. Grant's first issued album as a leader was Grant's First Stand. This was followed in the same year by Green Street and Grantstand. Grant was named best new star in the Down Beat critics' poll, in 1962. He often provided support to the other important musicians on Blue Note, including saxophonists Hank Mobley, Ike Quebec, Stanley Turrentine and organist Larry Young.
