Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 461/500!

Bon Iver's debut full-length For Emma, Forever Ago made major waves in critics' circles based on the strength of an early artist-pressed advance CD and a couple awe-inspiring sets at CMJ back in October 2007. The New York Times called it "irresistible" and Pitchfork stamped its early review of the album with a Recommended tag. For those of you hiding away in a cabin of your own, it's time that you hear the story, and more importantly, the music.

Released as part of a partnership between the record labels and distribution teams at Secretly Group, Exceleration Music, Warp Records, Ninja Tune and Beggars Group, and Music Declares Emergency and the Music Climate Pact, this vinyl reissue is launched in tandem with World Environment Day on June 5, 2026. Dedicated to driving awareness around sustainability practices and transparency across both record stores and consumers, the inaugural campaign features a series of special edition album releases available at retail in the US, Canada and UK, as well as DTC, each pressed on 100% recycled vinyl material.

Every LP was made with material that has been reclaimed from production and distribution: manufacturing trim, quality rejects and unsold stock, meaning that no new virgin, fossil fuel-delivered plastic was used. Through this process, each individual record looks completely unique, while still sounding as fantastic.

"Manufacturing is typically the highest source of carbon emissions for record labels, and through working closely with our vinyl plants, Secretly Group has cut our manufacturing footprint by 70% against our 2023 baseline. Increasing recycled vinyl production and partaking in a collective effort are the next pieces of the puzzle in making our industry a more sustainable one. We're stoked to be partnering with our peer labels, distributors, record stores, and fans on this campaign," says Ben Swanson, Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer, Secretly Group.

In an effort to set a new and more sustainable precedent for catalogs to be repressed on reclaimed vinyl rather than the standard black or other colored variants, all records in the recycled vinyl campaign have also been manufactured at pressing plants that have shown commitments to sustainability, by participating in the Music Climate Pact and the Vinyl Alliance Sustainable Supplier Programme.

ReVinyl color is chosen at random — pressed using 100% reclaimed vinyl material.

Almost every song has a moment where the emotion peaks and hearts begin to weaken and bend: the beauty of that voice is what pulls you through every time. For Emma captures the sound of broken and quiet isolation, wraps it in a beautiful package, and delivers it to your door with a beating, bruised heart. It's quite an achievement for a debut and the promise of greatness in the future is high.
-Tim Sendra, AllMusic, 5/5
Justin Vernon didn't plan on reshaping a generation's understanding of love-torn folk music when he retreated to the Wisconsin woods to record his first album, but that's exactly what happened. What's even more staggering is the way Vernon's Auto-Tune and falsetto-laden DIY debut, which centered around the heartsick 'Skinny Love,' would reshape the contours of the pop mainstream — from Ed Sheeran and Kanye West to James Blake and Taylor Swift — for years to come.
-Rolling Stone
What Vernon has wrought is a powerful, haunting collection of the music of isolation and deep melancholia.
-Robert Baird, Stereophile
Rarely does folk—indie or otherwise—give so much over to ambience...
