Vocalist Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist / composer / bandleader, and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist / guitarist / bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Catherine's professional life began early. After graduating with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she toured and recorded with Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Toshi Reagon and Rosanne Cash, among others, appearing on over 200 albums.

Catherine Russell lit up the room at Studio47 on April 21, 2023. Captured straight to tape on 24 channels of pure analog perfection via Stella 1020's almost never used Otari MX-80. Mastered down via an incredible 1/2 inch 1/2 track modified Otari MTR-10 and finally a 1/4 inch master copy produced just for you. It's like she is in the room!

Stella Records is a recording company founded in 2000 by Marco Stella and Ryan O'Connor of Reel To Reel Haven, with the mission of bringing the best possible recorded source material to everyone's house. Best is of course subjective, but for them, the ingredients you need to aspire to be the Best are not.

From Mic to 1/4 Inch 1st Generation Master Tape Copy

The recording process is 100% analog, maintaining the original wave form from microphone to your very own ¼ inch master tape copy.

Traveling from the mics through a SSL AWS 924 Delta console, to the 2 inch Otari MX-80, the signal never touches a digital interface.

The original recording is then mastered to a ½ inch 2 track Otari MTR-10 with brand new heads (combination of original unused Otari & Flux Magnetics).

From there, ¼ master tape copies are produced on one of several Studer and Otari ¼ mastering tape recorders.

** It is standard practice in all recording studios to keep the tape "tail out". This reduces "pre-echo" and it means that the tape should be placed on the right hand side of the recorder, re-wound and then played.
