11th Anniversary Expanded Edition Double LP!
Includes 3 Bonus Tracks + New Track Sequence by Dave Alvin!
TAS Rated 4/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the March 2023 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
To celebrate the eleventh anniversary of Eleven Eleven, Dave Alvin has added three songs to the album, which were originally released as bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. This album includes songs which are now standards in Dave Alvin's live set, including "Johnny Ace is Dead," "Harlan County Line" and "What's Up With Your Brother," featuring Dave's brother, Phil Alvin.
The album received critical praise upon its 2011 release. MOJO said, "A lot happens on Eleven Eleven - all of it good," and The Independent (UK) claimed, the "album may be his best yet!"
"Harlan County Line" was featured in the TV show Justified, where Dave Alvin also guest-starred.
Since this album's original release, Dave Alvin has released two albums with his brother, Phil Alvin; an album collaborating with Jimmie Dale Gilmore; and an album by his psych-rock improv group The Third Mind, as well as a compilation of solo odds and ends. But Eleven Eleven stands as one of Dave's greatest albums, among his many great albums. It is more than worthy of an anniversary reissue, and an Eleventh Anniversary released on November 11, as was the original album, is only appropriate.
reaffirms his status as one of the best and most distinctive American songwriters alive
Dave Alvin continues his transformation from journeyman musician to becoming one of the people he always idolized: the one of a kind bluesmen and storytellers, rock and rollers and poets, folk singers and road warriors whose influences he's absorbed since he was a kid growing up fast in Downey, California.
Alvin sounds like he is having fun, even when he's singing a sad song. He's a true troubadour, in the best sense of the word.
This is quintessential Dave Alvin... visceral blues-rock — you can sense the hair rise on the back of Alvin's neck on the autobiographical 'What's Up with Your Brother?,' a duet with sibling Phil Alvin; sense the sorrow of 'Johnny Ace Is Dead'; and taste the sweat on the blue-collar anthem 'Gary, Indiana, 1959.'
