With a career spanning five decades, Dave Brubeck stands today as one of the most influential pianists and bandleaders of the modern jazz era. Though he has created a remarkable body of jazz and formal music - including orchestral, oratorios and ballet scores - his best known recordings are those which feature the liquid alto sax of Paul Desmond.
Originally released on Atlantic, this 1972 release was recorded in Berlin, Paris and Rotterdam during an overseas Newport Jazz Festival tour, and it reunited past and present members of the Brubeck group who gathered to create a truly remarkable work. Brubeck and Desmond work their magic interplay, with the masterful contributions of legendary Gerry Mulligan, one of the most important baritone saxophonists in jazz. The quintet is rounded out with Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums.
Brubeck co-produced the title with Siegfried Loch. For jazz fans and audiophiles, this release will prove an essential addition to their libraries. These jazz giants literally recreated Take Five on this album, and it is delivered here as a musical and sonic blockbuster. The master tapes for this title are in startlingly pristine condition, allowing Mobile Fidelity to take full advantage of its mastering technology.
