"Hush", originally written by American composer and musician Joe South, was recorded by British hard rock band Deep Purple for their 1968 debut album, Shades Of Deep Purple. The track became the group's first hit single peaking at number 4 on The Hot 100 and number 2 in Canada, while going largely unnoticed in the United Kingdom. "One More Rainy Day" was written by Rod Evans and Jon Lord and it was recorded on May 13, 1968, being the last track to be recorded for the debut album. "Kentucky Woman" was originally written and recorded by Neil Diamond. Deep Purple re-recorded it with a vastly different instrumental feel, if not vocal line, and managed to reach #38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #21 Canadian RPM charts. The single version is an edit of the album one. Deep Purple played "Kentucky Woman" live on tour in 1968 and after Ian Gillan joined the band in the summer of 1969. It has never been on Deep Purple's set list since. The B-side "Hard Road", firstly titled "Wring That Neck", was renamed in the USA (and Japan) as the original title was considered too violent. Written by Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, "River Deep - Mountain High" was among the first recordigns that Ike & Tina Turner did for Phil Spector's Phillies Records in 1966. A ten-minute version was recorded by Deep Purple for their 1968 album, The Book Of Taliesyn. An edited version owas freleased as a single inthe United States 9and other countries like Japan), reaching number 53 in early 1969. "Listen, Learn, Read On", the opening track from The Book Of Taliesyn, is featured as a B-side. It seems that "Emmaretta" was the last song that the original line-up of the band (Blackmore, Evans, Lord, Paice, Simper) recorded before Evans and Simper lef tthe band. It is a song with soul, blues and funky influences, one of the best that this line-up recorded. The B-side of this single includes a different and shorter version of "The Bird Has Flown". The full version of this was included in their third self-titled ablum from 1969. "Halleluja" featured the new singer Ian Gillan on one of the most singluar minor key compositions of the band. The B-side is an instrumental cut from three part long suite "April" from their self-titled third album.
