The 1969 biker film, starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, and featuring a very young Jack Nicholson, has since become a cult-classic. The story explores social issues and tensions in the U.S. during the late '60s such as the rise and fall of the hippie movement, drug use, and the communal lifestyle.

The soundtrack for the film includes music by The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Roger McGuinn, Steppenwolf, Smith & more.

To deal with licensing issues prohibiting the use of The Band's recording of "The Weight", ABC-Dunhill commissioned Smith to record a cover of the song for the soundtrack.
