Freddie Hubbard's second Blue Note album Goin' Up delivered on the promise of his debut Open Sesame by once again proving him to be one of the most exciting new trumpeters on the jazz scene. Recorded in 1960, the date found Hubbard in elite company with a quintet featuring Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums for a dynamic set of high-energy hard bop. The six-song set includes two pieces by revered trumpeter and composer Kenny Dorham ("Asiatic Raes" and "Karioka") as well as a pair of compositions by Mobley ("The Changing Scene" and "A Peck a Sec"). The band only slows down once for the exquisite ballad "I Wished I Knew" by Bill Smith before Hubbard's swaggering "Blues for Brenda" brings the album to a close.
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
